Professional whitening uses peroxide to break apart pigment molecules trapped inside enamel and dentin. That is why it lightens intrinsic discoloration that no toothpaste can reach.
Why a dental evaluation comes first
Whitening gel does not change the color of crowns, veneers, bonding or fillings. If those restorations are visible when you smile, we plan around them so you do not end up with a mismatched result. Untreated decay or exposed roots also need attention before bleaching.
In-office versus supervised take-home
In-office treatment delivers a dramatic change in a single visit under controlled conditions. Custom take-home trays work more gradually and give you a maintenance kit you can reuse for years. Many patients combine both: one visit to establish the result, trays to hold it.
Managing sensitivity
Temporary sensitivity is common and almost always short-lived.
- Use a potassium nitrate or fluoride desensitizing toothpaste for two weeks beforehand
- Shorten wear time rather than stopping altogether
- Space treatments out by a day when teeth feel reactive
- Avoid very hot or cold foods immediately after a session
Keeping the result
Rinse after coffee, tea, red wine and dark sauces, use a straw for iced drinks, and plan a brief touch-up with your trays every few months. Most patients hold a bright result for a year or more with modest maintenance.
