Most of the dental problems we treat did not start as emergencies. They started as small, quiet changes that were easy to reverse. A preventive routine is simply a way of catching those changes while they are still small.
Twice-yearly cleanings still do the heavy lifting
Professional cleanings remove hardened tartar that brushing cannot reach, especially along the gumline and between back teeth. Your hygienist also measures gum pocket depths, which is one of the earliest objective signals that gum health is drifting.
Some patients benefit from a three or four month interval instead of six. Deeper pockets, a history of gum disease, diabetes, pregnancy, orthodontic appliances or heavy tartar buildup are all reasons we may recommend more frequent visits.
What a thorough exam should include
A cleaning without an exam is only half the visit. Each recall appointment should look at the whole picture.
- Cavity screening, including between teeth where decay hides
- Gum measurements and bleeding points
- Bite and wear patterns that hint at clenching or grinding
- An oral cancer screening of the tongue, cheeks, palate and throat
- A check of existing fillings, crowns and implants
Home care that changes outcomes
Two minutes of brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste is the baseline. What separates good outcomes from great ones is cleaning between teeth daily — floss, interdental brushes or a water flosser all work when used consistently.
Timing matters too. After acidic foods or drinks, rinse with water and wait about thirty minutes before brushing so softened enamel is not scrubbed away.
Signals worth a call, not a wait
Bleeding gums, lingering sensitivity to cold, a rough edge that catches your tongue, a change in how your teeth fit together, or a spot in your mouth that has not healed in two weeks all deserve an evaluation. Early attention almost always means a smaller, simpler treatment.
