Invisalign works through a series of custom trays that apply gentle, planned pressure. The treatment plan assumes a certain number of hours per day — falling short is the single most common reason a case runs long.
Wear time is the whole game
Plan on 20 to 22 hours a day. Practically, that means aligners come out for meals and brushing and go straight back in. Set a timer for the first two weeks until it becomes automatic.
Eating, drinking and staining
Water is fine with trays in. Coffee, tea, soda, wine and sports drinks are not — heat can warp the plastic and pigments can discolor it. Rinse before reinserting so sugars are not held against your enamel.
Keeping trays clear and odor-free
A cloudy aligner is usually a hygiene issue, not a manufacturing one.
- Rinse trays every time they come out
- Brush them gently with a soft brush and cool water, not hot
- Skip abrasive toothpaste, which scratches and dulls the plastic
- Store them in the case, never wrapped in a napkin
Attachments, refinements and retainers
Small tooth-colored attachments give aligners something to grip for complex movements. Near the end, a refinement series often fine-tunes the result. Once teeth are where you want them, retainers keep them there — teeth drift for life, and retention is not optional.
