Children's Oral Health: Milestones From First Tooth to First Job

April 21, 2026 · 6 min read

Children's mouths change quickly, and the right advice at age three is not the right advice at thirteen. Here is a simple map of what matters when.

Infants and toddlers

Wipe gums after feeding even before teeth appear. Once the first tooth erupts, brush twice daily with a smear of fluoride toothpaste. A first dental visit around the first birthday is mostly about coaching parents and normalizing the environment.

Ages three to six

Children lack the fine motor control for effective brushing until roughly age seven, so an adult should brush or re-brush. This is also the window where habits like prolonged thumb sucking or pacifier use start to influence how the jaws develop.

The school years

Permanent molars arrive around six and twelve, and they are the most cavity-prone teeth in the mouth.

  • Sealants protect the deep grooves of new molars
  • Fluoride varnish adds resistance during high-risk years
  • Custom mouthguards for any contact or ball sport
  • An orthodontic evaluation around age seven catches growth issues early

Teenagers

Independence, sports drinks and snacking raise cavity risk right as supervision drops. Wisdom teeth should be monitored with imaging so decisions are made before crowding or infection forces the issue.
